Get a permit to install a swimming pool

A permit, sometimes called certificate of authorization, is required to install a swimming pool on your property. Learn more about how to submit an application to your borough.

Before submitting your application, please make sure that you have all the documents concerning your project and that your project meets the pool installation standards in you borough.

You can submit your request online and go in person to a point of service in your borough.

A permit is required to install a swimming pool, whether it is in-ground, semi in-ground, above-ground or portable.

If you have already obtained a permit for your portable pool, you are not required to submit a new application to reinstall the same pool next year, in the same place and under the same conditions.

Fees

You will be required to pay $9.80 for every $1,000 of work. Regardless of the amount of work, you must pay a minimum of $161.

Validity period

The permit is valid for a period of 18 months.

You have 12 months to start the work, as of the date of issuance of the permit. Otherwise, the permit is no longer valid and you must obtain a new one.

Renewing your permit

If your permit will expire before work starts, you can renew it at the borough permit counter. Fees apply.

If you have not completed the work and your permit is about to expire, contact the Borough in writing to extend its validity period for six months. You must provide reasons for the delay. No fees are applicable.

  • Landscape plan showing the entire property, demonstrating that at least 20 per cent of the lot is covered by vegetation planted in the ground. The location of every tree that will need to be removed to install the swimming pool must be indicated. Approval must be received prior to tree-felling.

  • the work is abandoned for more than six months

Fees

You will be required to pay $9.80 for every $1,000 of work, with a minimum of $160.45 for a residential building and $472.16 for a commercial, industrial, institutional or mixed-use building. A fixed amount of $448 is added to this sum.

Validity period

The permit is valid for a period of 9 months.

You have 6 months to start the work, as of the date of issuance of the permit. Otherwise, the permit is no longer valid and you must submit a new application. 

If your permit expires before the work is completed, you must submit a new application for a permit. The new permit will be valid for a period of three months and can only be issued once.

The permit renewal fee is 50 per cent of the original fee. Minimum fees apply.
