Call for biofood projects : Montréal funds eight NPOs

Here are the eight non-profit organizations and solidarity cooperatives that have been selected after a second call for projects in the biofood sector. They will share a financial contribution of $ 738,801.

To support economic and social recovery and Montréal’s biofood sector, which is recognized for its initiative, the city is turning to organizations that rely on sustainable business models, particularly in the circular economy.

The selected projects

  • Accès Bio Terre: to establish a production market garden on an urban brownfield (disused Canadian Pacific land), to conduct research on these gardens and to train new agricultural producers in the city
  • Carrefour alimentaire Centre-Sud: to reduce food waste by offering a range of meals and snacks made from recycled food
  • Le Conseil des industries bioalimentaires de l’Île de Montréal: to supply local products to the city’s early childhood (daycare) centres
  • The En Direct de la Ferme solidarity cooperative: to diversify their product line, including their prepared meals
  • The La Place Commune solidarity cooperative: to reduce agricultural waste by producing canned goods and dishes prepared with recovered food
  • The Hochelaga-Maisonneuve collective kitchen: to grow fruits and vegetables in an industrial zone to supply Montréal’s east end from a local source
  • Food’Elles: to perfect the training of its diverse female chefs and to set up a professional kitchen to serve business clients
  • Le Grand Potager: to increase and improve the agricultural production of Verdun’s municipal greenhouses.

The current pandemic situation and the economic context are stimulating consumer demand for local products and increasing pressure on the biofood sector. This financial support from the City, offered jointly with the Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation du Québec (MAPAQ), is intended to boost the biofood sector and expand the availability of its products in Montréal.
