Every year on September 21, the International Day of Peace is celebrated around the world. Accordingly, in Saint-Laurent, a ceremony brought together key borough stakeholders and Council members at the 12 strokes of noon at parc Beaudet, also known as “parc de la paix”.
Organized in partnership with the intercultural committee of the Comité des organismes sociaux de Saint-Laurent, the event unfolded under the theme “Recovering better for a sustainable and equitable world”, proclaimed by the United Nations. This theme invites everyone to reflect on the best way to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and advocates for a green and sustainable economy.
One by one, Saint-Laurent figures came forward to present their testimonials and offer their visions of a world that is both peaceful and green. During this brief and touching ceremony, the reminder was offered that peace starts with small daily actions, however, the entire community benefits.
A message which, as the organizers fervently hope, will echo around the community and resound for adults and children alike.
Appearing on the photo are the City Councillor for Norman-McLaren District, Aref Salem, the Mayor of Saint-Laurent, Alan DeSousa, and the Borough Councillor for Côte-de-Liesse District, Jacques Cohen, surrounded by representatives from different borough agencies.
“We can rely on solid agencies in Saint-Laurent that advocate for peace, but it is also up to each and every one of us to do our share. On this International Day of Peace, we suggest that you start with simple gestures, such as maintaining good relationships with your neighbours or offering to help a senior citizen in your neighbourhood.”
