Fight against racism: Creation of a city office
Montréal is making a commitment to inclusivity and the fight against discrimination. To make this commitment tangible, it has created a new commissioner’s office, the Bureau du commissaire à la lutte au racisme et à la discrimination systémiques.
This new structure will act transversally within the municipal apparatus to fight racism and discrimination. It will also inform residents and municipal civil servants of their rights and recourses in situations of discrimination. Its mission is to propose measures to make Montréal a fairer, more inclusive city.
This office is a first in the history of the city. It was created in response to a recommendation made in a report from the Office de consultation publique de Montréal and a roundtable on diversity that led the mayor of Montréal to recognize the existence of systemic racism.
The office will work jointly with Montréal’s Indigenous Affairs commissioner and commissioner for people living with homelessness to create a zero tolerance approach to all forms of discrimination. Its objective is to create an in-depth change of organizational culture.
The commissioner is tasked with building and implementing an action plan. In addition to this key resource, three other professional positions have been created, including a racial profiling specialist who will work within the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal.
