Starting this year, whether you are a tenant or owner, you will no longer receive a bill for water and waste management services.
Previously, all households in LaSalle had to pay these charges per dwelling unit: $40 for water (reduced to $30 in 2020) and $100 for waste management (reduced to $60 in 2020).
Owners of single-family homes or condominiums were charged on their tax bill, while tenants and «plex» owners received a specific bill for these charges. And now, these charges are gone! Ville de Montréal had until January 1, 2022, to harmonize its tax system—a legal requirement
under the Act respecting municipal territorial organization of 2002. The City is therefore complying with the Act one year before the deadline.
Notice to tenants: it isn’t your landlord who pays your bill
Although tenants will no longer receive a bill for these charges, it will not be offset by an equivalent increase in their landlord’s property tax bill. There is no direct relation between these two tax events. Water service costs will be shared among all residential buildings in LaSalle (including single-family homes, condos, etc.) in the water service tax and the costs for waste management services will be shared by all buildings on the general property tax bill.
