Placement program for former Montréal carriage horses
As of December 31, 2019, horse-drawn carriages will no longer be permitted on the streets of Montréal. Owners of carriage horses are invited to find out more about our placement program
On this page:
Description
In partnership with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), the city has established a program under which carriage horses that have worked in Old Montréal and elsewhere in the city are placed. Program applications will be accepted from May 1, 2019 to April 30, 2021.
Owners of carriage horses are entitled to the following services:
Placement in a shelter or with an adoptive family
In collaboration with Galahad, the Association québécoise de protection des chevaux, the Montréal SPCA will place your horse in a shelter or with an adoptive family.
The latter must make a commitment:
- not to use the animal for commercial purposes
- not to resell the horse, including at auction or to a slaughterhouse
- to allow the former owners to visit the horse once a year
Financial compensation
Compensation of $1,000 per horse will be paid to owners who give up their horses.
Eligibility criteria
To participate in the program, you must:
- own a carriage horse working in Montréal
- authorize us to have the horse examined by a veterinarian, to carry out a Coggins test and send the results to the Montréal SPCA (we will defray the fee for the test)
- authorize the Montréal SPCA to promote the horse on the Galahad Web site as soon as its registration is confirmed.
