With its 876 km of bike paths, plenty of places to jog and skate parks, Montréal has plenty to offer to people who want to stay in shape during the summertime. Here are some ideas for sports you can enjoy solo or with family and friends.

Bike paths of all kinds

Do you want to explore Montréal’s horizons on your bike? Thanks to the metro and commuter trains, remote locations are easily accessed. Nature lovers can visit the Parc-nature de la Pointe-aux-Prairies, which is known for its diverse ecosystems. Take the opportunity to watch a few different species of birds before settling down for a picnic.

Do you fancy a stroll through history? The Des Berges walkway, which leads to the east end of the city, will take you to Old Pointe-aux-Trembles. You can admire the old mill and several other historic buildings while enjoying the nearby St. Lawrence River.

The more adventurous will venture to Parc Jean-Drapeau for a tour of the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve. The race track, which is located right in the middle of the St. Lawrence Riveroffers breathtaking views of Montréal. After a lot of biking, what could be better than cooling off at the aquatic complex? Don’t forget your bathing suit.

Most urbanites will opt for short rides on BIXI on weekends. Hit the handlebars!

Running and jogging in the city

Mount Royal, an oasis of greenery, is of course a must for runners. The escarpment trail on the northeast side of the mountain offers superb views of the city and its surroundings. Several other options are available. The mountain is the ideal place for runners who like to vary their routes.

Did you know that Montréal is often called an open-air museum? If you want to admire some of its murals (in French), the best option is to leave from Place des Arts, take Rue Sainte-Catherine Ouest and then go up Boulevard Saint-Laurent northbound to Boulevard Saint-Joseph. Guaranteed to delight your eyes.

Another fun route is to run on the Jacques Cartier Bridge bike path. You are sure to enjoy a multisensorial experience, with the river under your feet, the silhouette of the skyscrapers on one side and, on the other, the Parc Jean-Drapeau and its lush vegetation.

Parc La Fontaine is one of the most beautiful parks in Montréal. Because it is flat, it is especially appreciated by those who are new to running. It is nonetheless a very lively park where you can enjoy watching both people and wildlife. There are several cafés and restaurants nearby to take a well-deserved break after your workout.

Motion galore for skateboarders and BMX enthusiasts

For thrill seekers, the brand new skateboard park located in Mile End under the Van Horne viaduct, is a must. This will be your opportunity to compete with real skateboard pros. Are you ready for the challenge?

The Père-Marquette skate park, inaugurated last year, is also among skateboarders’ favourites. Like the one in Mile End, it was designed with the help of, who also contributed to the design and choice of modules.

Would you and your family like to discover wheelsports? TAZ is a perfect place. This indoor skate park is accessible to everyone, regardless of their level of experience. You can organize children’s parties or take parent-child classes with a special coach.
