City’s administrative district: a revitalized and accessible location

Montréal will be carrying out redevelopment work around city hall, in order to configure a more user-friendly historical site. This project is part of the urban planning of a very specific location in Old Montréal: the administrative district. Work is scheduled to last approximately 15 months.

What 

The city’s administrative district includes buildings and public areas of interest having a heritage that dates back to the 17th century. The district will become an exceptional destination for those visiting or working in Old Montréal. 

The current phase of the construction work aims to enhance the back façade of city hall and to improve the paths of the Champ-de-Mars. We will also be taking the opportunity to redevelop local infrastructures, as well as sidewalks in the area. 

The details are as follows:

Work projected for the fall of 2024 

  • Improvement of street lighting 
  • Installation of a stormwater drainage system 
  • Installation of granite curbs 

Work scheduled for 2025 

  • Construction of a sidewalk on Rue Gosford 
  • Construction of walkways and developments 
  • Installation of anti-ram bollards in front of Place Vauquelin, on Allée des Huissiers and in front of the main entrance of city hall 
  • Reconstruction of the vehicular lane using materials that are consistent with the context 

Traffic and parking 

Fall of 2024

  • Hindrance on Rue Notre-Dame between Place Jacques-Cartier and Rue Gosford until, november 2024. Maintaining one lane per direction. On-street parking temporarily unavailable;
  • Hindrance on Rue Gosford between Rue Saint-Antoine Ouest and Rue du Champ-de-Mars until December, 2024; 
  • The walkway linking Rue Saint-Antoine and Place Vauquelin remains accessible to pedestrians;
  • Partial and occasional hindrance on Place Vauquelin during fall of 2024.
