New bike paths on Rue Hochelaga

The city plans to build new protected bike paths on Rue Hochelaga and Rue du Havre. The area around the Préfontaine and Joliette stations will also be renovated to ensure safe interactions between cyclists and metro and bus users.

What

Along Rue Hochelaga 

  • One-way bike lanes will be built on each side of the street
  • Roads will be marked and bollards installed
  • Cyclist refuge islands with concrete borders will be added 
  • Pedestrian refuge islands will be added, along with a crossing in front of the Institut Teccart
  • Traffic lights will be added
  • Urban furniture (BIXI station, bike stand, etc.) will be added 

At the metro stations  

  • Sidewalks will be rebuilt and extensions added
  • Plant plots will be added

Work phases

Why

The work redesign will: 

  • Improve service to the two affected boroughs by providing a new protected east-west bike path and promoting better sharing of mobility space
  • Make using active and public transportation safer for Montrealers and their families
  • Improve the city’s bike network year round
  • Offer active transportation options that are better adapted to the current reality and to all residents
  • Better connect Montrealers to green spaces, other bike paths in the area, community centres and métro stations (Frontenac, Préfontaine, Joliette)
  • Calm car traffic to make the area more friendly
  • Make public spaces greener to add to the warm character of the neighbourhood.

Traffic and parking

Rue Hochelaga 

  • Two one-way bike lanes will be added in each direction
  • One traffic lane will be removed in each direction, from Rue du Havre to Avenue Desjardins
  • Improved visibility at intersections by removing some parking spaces
  • Speed limit reduced from 50 km/h to 30 km/h
  • Public transit service stays the same
  • 70 per cent of parking spots still available 

Rue du Havre 

  • Two-way bike lane eastbound will be added, between Rue Hochelaga and Rue Sainte-Catherine
  • Northbound traffic lane will now be one-way between Rue Hochelaga and Rue Ontario
