Everything you wanted to know about this project

When?

The first two work phases were carried out between 2022 and 2025. Work between Rue Sainte-Catherine Est and Boulevard René-Lévesque Est, including at intersections, resumes in mid-August 2026. In 2026, work operations will be performed at the intersection between Rue De Champlain and Rue Sainte-Catherine Est. They will continue in 2027 south of Rue Sainte-Catherine Est up to Boulevard René-Lévesque Est.

Where?

  • Phase 1: between Rue Sherbrooke Est and Rue La Fontaine (completed
  • Phase 2: between Rue La Fontaine and Rue Sainte-Catherine Est (completed
  • Phase 3: between Rue Sainte-Catherine Est and Boulevard René-Lévesque Est (including at intersections

What?

  • Reconstruction of water and sewer service lines
  • Replacement of water inlets, including lead water service inlets (only owners of buildings with lead water service inlets will receive a notice on this subject)
  • Complete road and sidewalk redevelopment
  • Conversion to one-way traffic in the northbound direction
  • Development of a new bike lane
  • Addition of lighting structures
  • Replacement of electrical and telecommunications networks
  • Planting of trees and vegetation

Why?

Built in 1927, the water main beneath Rue De Champlain has reached the end of its service life. In recent years, recurring breakages have affected the supply of drinking water.

Reconstruction will make it possible to:

  • Offer a greener, safer and more people-friendly street.
  • Secure the supply of drinking water in the borough of Ville-Marie and in Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles, as well as in Ville de Montréal-Est.
  • Improve the reliability of the network of water and sewer mains.
  • Maintain the reliability of fire services.
