Everything you wanted to know about this project
When will it start?
Work will begin in 2022 and will last two years.
The second phase of work is planned between Rue La Fontaine and Boulevard René-Lévesque Est. The pavement upgrading on this portion of the street is still in the design stage.
Where is the work being done?
- Rue de Champlain, between Rue Sherbrooke Est and Rue La Fontaine
What is being done?
Underground infrastructure reconstruction:
- Water main
- Sewers and secondary water mains
Replacement of lead service lines: Only residents affected will receive a notice about this work.
Surface redesign:
- The roadway and sidewalks will be completely repaired
- The street will become one-way northbound
- A new bicycle lane will be installed
- Lighting structures will be added
- Traffic lights and electrical networks will be replaced
- New trees and plants will be added
Why?
Built in 1927, the water main under Rue De Champlain has reached the end of its life. In the last few years, it has broken often. This has affected the drinking water supply.
The reconstruction will:
- Secure the drinking water supply for Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Montréal-Est, Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles and Ville-Marie
- Enhance the reliability of the water main system
- Ensure the reliability of the fire service
- Make the street friendlier, greener and safer
