Structural and electric work on the mount Royal cross

The mount Royal cross, iconic feature of our city, is undergoing rejuvenation work, in keeping with its heritage value. The aim is to strengthen its structure and to replace its electrical system. New lightbulbs will be installed, and it will be lit again during the fall of 2027.
When?
September 2026 to spring 2028
Where?
Mount Royal summit, in the area of the loop
What?
Construction work includes:
- Replacing steel parts to meet structural standards under applicable codes and norms
- Electrical work, including:
- Modernization of the lighting system
- Installation of white LED lightbulbs reminiscent of those used when the cross was first lit up, in 1924.
- Painting of the structure
- New plants and general reconditioning of the site
Why?
- To ensure the durability, preservation and enhancement of this symbolic feature of our metropolis
- To strengthen the structure in compliance with applicable codes and standards and to improve resistance to extreme weather changes
- To replace the lighting system that currently contains obsolete components
- To reduce light pollution around the summit
