Supporting documents for the dog

  • 1 current rabies vaccination certificate

Supporting documents concerning the dog’s guardian

You must provide 1 photo ID, 1 proof of address, and 1 criminal background check document that must be renewed annually.

  • Québec health insurance card
  • Canadian or foreign passport
  • Canadian citizenship card
  • Canadian permanent resident card
  • Certificate and identity card issued by Doctors of the World Canada
  • Recent utility account statement (electricity, telephone, natural gas distribution company, cable or Internet services) issued within the past 3 months
  • Account statement from a recent recognized educational institution issued within the past 3 months
  • Account statement from a recent financial or credit institution issued within the past 3 months
  • Tax account statement for the current year
  • Notice of assessment from Revenu Québec or the CRA
  • Employment Insurance statement
  • Notice of renewal for guardian’s Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) health card
  • Notice of renewal for the guardian’s Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) driver’s license
  • Accès Montréal card for the current year
  • Home insurance certificate or statement issued during the past year

Special situations

Change in guardianship of a potentially dangerous dog

A guardian is prohibited from giving or transferring custody of a potentially dangerous dog to another guardian. Only transfers to a shelter or veterinary facility are allowed. Two days before the transfer, the guardian must call 311 to inform the city.

Relocation or death of the dog

Guardians must call 311 to inform the city at least 2 days before moving and/or changing the location at which their potentially dangerous dog is kept.

Guardians must provide a document certifiying that the dog has died.
