Enhanced road safety measures for the start of the school year

With the return to school comes the return of our most precious road users: our children. Once again this year, additional measures will be put in place to improve the safety of our little ones in school zones.

Encouraging results for the educational speed cameras

Last year, 44 educational speed cameras were installed near the borough’s 22 elementary and high schools. 

The goal: to make drivers more aware of their speed and encourage them to slow down to comply with the 30 km/h speed limit.

 Just a few months after they were installed, a change in driver behavior was already noticeable. According to our data, the average speed had dropped by just over 10 km/h. 

This reduction not only helps improve safety for students, but also for parents, teachers, and everyone else on the road. 

Initiatives for the 2026 school year 

This year, two new measures will be implemented. 

  • 48 speed bumps will be installed on the busiest residential streets. 

    The goal is to encourage drivers to obey speed limits and exercise greater caution in areas with many families. 

  • Fast-flashing rectangular lights will be installed at the 14 pedestrian crossings in the borough that pose the greatest risk*. 

    These include boulevard Saint-Jean, de Pierrefonds, des Sources, and Jacques-Bizard, as well as rue Antoine-Faucon.

    The goal is to increase the visibility of people traveling on foot or by bicycle, particularly at night, in bad weather, or in areas where they are difficult to see. 

* This initiative is made possible by funding from the Quebec government through the Programme d’aide financière du Fonds de la sécurité routière.

SPVM Operations: awareness and repression

From August 27 through September 18, the SPVM will be conducting its “Back-to-School” operation. There will be an increased police presence near school zones to address individuals whose behavior could endanger our youth. Examples include speeding and dangerous maneuvers such as making U-turns in prohibited areas. 

The growing popularity of electric scooters among a very young crowd has also led to increased public awareness. Since the beginning of summer, enforcement efforts have been carried out to remind riders of safety rules for using motorized personal transportation devices. 

Make sure that you, your children, and the device you are using comply with the rules and that you stay within the designated areas.
