Fire Station 26 is currently being rebuilt.
During renovation, advanced deterioration of outdoor walls was revealed. To avoid its collapse, the building was demolished, and the construction site was closed in June 2019.
Fire station n° 26 must now be entirely rebuilt. This unexpected situation substantially changes the scope of the original project and the nature of the contracts that were awarded. Under the Cities and Towns Act, these contracts were terminated after careful assessment and approval by city officials.
In 2020, the city awarded a contract to a new group of professionals to prepare plans and estimates to rebuild the fire station identically. Once designs are finished, a new call for bids fr a contractor will be launched in 2021 in order to complete the work over the course of the year.
The original stone facade was dismantled and is in storage to be restored and reused. A company that specializes in historic buildings will be hired to ensure that the facade is properly reinstalled while preserving its original architectural characteristics.
