Name origin

Le Grand Cirque Ordinaire is a Montreal-based theatre troupe founded in 1969 by Paule Baillargeon, Jocelyn Bérubé, Suzanne Garceau, Claude Laroche, Guy Thauvette, and initiated by Raymond Cloutier. Defining itself as a 'collective of liberated actors,' the troupe embraced a collaborative creative approach rooted in improvisation and social representation.

Driven by a community-oriented vision, Le Grand Cirque Ordinaire produced a dozen musical tragedies over a span of 17 years. These performances captured the identity and political upheavals that were unfolding across the province at the time. By democratizing the performing arts and asserting Quebec’s cultural originality, the troupe revolutionized Montreal’s cultural scene.
