Bed bugs propagate rapidly and can be found in all types of homes, whether clean or unsanitary. In order to get rid of these infestations, it’s important to act quickly. Learn what you need to do.

Identifying bed bugs

The bed bug is an insect the size and colour of an apple seed. Some signs can be helpful in detecting their presence. For example, check to see if:

  • you have bites similar to mosquito bites
  • your skin is itchy
  • small black spots appear on your sheets and on the seams of your mattress

What to do in the event of an infestation

Tenant

Please do not try to resolve the problem on your own. Immediately notify your landlord, who will have to call for an exterminator. Before the exterminator’s visit, put away all items in the rooms and place your clothes and bedding in airtight bags.

If the landlord does not take the measures required to exterminate the bed bugs, you must contact 311.

Report the presence of insects or rodents in a dwelling

Landlord

Once you receive the notice from your tenant, you must immediately contact a certified exterminator. You must allow the exterminator to visit the entire building in order to determine the scope of the infestation and get rid of it.

Exterminator

You must complete a declaration form for each operation performed in Montréal.
