Violations can be costly
Frequent violations under the Highway Safety Code and municipal Bylaw no. 878 that are committed near schools and the fines issued to offenders are indicated in the section below.
Every person must comply with every road or traffic sign or signal erected under this Code. Driving the wrong way on a one-way street is prohibited.
Fine: $100 + costs
Where traffic is directed by a police officer, a school crossing guard or a flag person in charge of directing traffic around or about work sites, every person shall obey his orders or signals even if contrary to existing traffic signs or signals.
Fine for drivers: $300 + costs + 4 demerit points
Fine for cyclists: $80 + costs
Fine for pedestrians: $15 + costs
The driver of a road vehicle or a cyclist must stop their vehicle when facing a stop sign.
Fine for drivers: $200 + costs + 3 demerit points
Fine for cyclists: $80 + costs
No person may drive a road vehicle carrying a passenger under 16 years of age who does not fulfill the obligations prescribed under this Code, such as wearing a seatbelt.
Fine: $80 + costs + 3 demerit points
The driver of a road vehicle or a cyclist who is approaching a bus or minibus used for the transportation of school children with flashing red lights turned on or whose compulsory stop signal has been activated must stop their vehicle more than 5 metres from the bus or minibus and shall not meet or pass it until the flashing red lights are turned off and the compulsory stop signal has been retracted, and they have ascertained that they can advance safely.
Fine for drivers: $200 + costs + 9 demerit points
Fine for cyclists : $80 + costs
No person shall stop or park a road vehicle in such a way as to obstruct or impede the passage of other road vehicles.
Fine: $71 + costs
No person may stop or park a road vehicle in a location where there is a “No stopping” or “No parking” sign.
Fine: $65 + costs
No person may stop or park a road vehicle at an intersection.
Fine: $65 + costs
