Do you manage a building with 20 or more dwellings? The use of a front-loading container is now recommended for recyclable packaging and printed materials that are picked up in large quantities as part of a front-loading container collection.

New rules

Since Éco Entreprises Québec has modernized recycling collections, the rules have changed:

  • Recycling bins are not provided to buildings with 20 or more housing units. The landlord is responsible for purchasing equipment to store materials between collections.
  • If your building received bins before January 1, 2025, you can still use them, but damaged bins will not be replaced.
  • Front-loading containers are preferred. You must register for collection service in order for the recyclables to be collected.

Acceptable containers

We authorize:

  • Front-loading containers measuring 2 to 8 cubic yards
  • Containers with flat, sloping or rooftop lids

Smaller containers (2 to 3 cubic yards) can be wheeled for easier handling. Choose blue for recyclables.

Container locations

On collection day

Containers can be positioned:

  • On the sidewalk, leaving enough space for pedestrians to pass safely
  • On the street, leaving enough space for vehicles to pass safely

As soon as the container has been emptied by collectors, you must store it.

On non-collection days

You can store your container:

  • On the grounds of the building: If possible, in the garage.
  • On public property: If you lack space, you can store it on the sidewalk provided you have a temporary permit to occupy public property. Prices and permit procedures vary by borough.
