Renting a room or an entire principal residence to tourists is permitted anywhere in Montréal from June 10 to September 10, except in Lachine, Saint-Laurent and Saint-Léonard. An operating permit is required and certain conditions apply.

Renting a house, a condo or an apartment that is not a principal residence to tourists is considered a commercial activity. This type of accommodation, authorized year-round, is only permitted in certain areas and requires an occupancy permit.

Rentals for more than 31 days are considered residential rentals and not short-term tourist accommodations. They are overseen by the Tribunal administratif du logement (TAL), which regulates the rights and obligations of renters.

When to report a problem

Non-compliance with the regulations

Please contact us is you think that a dwelling is not compliant with municipal regulations, for example:

  • A principal residence rented outside of the authorized period
  • A commercial tourist accommodation operated outside of the permitted areas
  • A person who rents their residence without a permit 

Nuisances caused by a tourist accommodation

  • Report any nuisance related to a tourist accommodation. For example:
  • Garbage stemming from the rental
  • A cleanliness problem in a dwelling
  • Noise complaints made by neighbours
