Rent your principal residence to tourists

Want to rent your house, condo or appartment and advertise it on an Airbnb-type tourism platform? You must get a host permit and apply for a new one each year.

Conditions

Rental period

Rentals are allowed from June 10 to September 10. You may rent your residence several times, whether to the same person, or to different people, for a maximum of 31 days during this period.

Location

You can rent your home in any Montréal borough except Lachine, Saint-Laurent and Saint-Léonard.

Type of accommodation

The condo, the house or the apartment you want to rent must be your principal residence. 

  • If you are an owner, you must live on site.
  • If you are a tenant, your lease must authorize the use of the premises for short-term tourist purposes, or you must get written authorization from your landlord.

Rental types

You must rent to one person or to a group of people under one reservation. You cannot serve any meals.

Commercial leases

Do you want to rent a space to tourists that is not your principal residence? You must get a certificate of occupancy.

Required documents

You must provide digital copies of the following documents:

Most recent provincial notice of assessment

  • Print the pdf version of the notice of assessment issued by Revenu Québec.
  • Redact your personal tax information, such as your identification number, notice number, or amount due or payable using a black marker.
  • Scan the notice of assessment.

Photo ID

One of the following types of photo ID:

  • Driver’s license
  • Québec health insurance card
  • Canadian or foreign passport
  • Canadian citizenship card
  • Canadian permanent resident card

CITQ registration certificate

Valid certificate issued in accordance with the Tourist Accommodation Act. If you do not yet have a certificate, please fill out the CITQ Notice of Compliance form.

Other documents required depending on your situation

One of the following documents:

  • Title deed
  • Municipal or school tax account

If the building is a divided condominium, one of the following documents:

  • Provisions of the declaration of co-ownership that authorize operation of a tourist home
  • Authorization from the syndicate of co-owners
  • Lease that mentions operating a tourist accommodation establishment, or, if no such mention exists, lease accompanied by the owner’s authorization for a tourist accommodation establishment
  • If other tenants are mentioned in the lease, their authorization

Steps to follow

Applications may only be filed online, not in person. Follow the steps that apply to your situation.

I have the CITQ registration certificate

Complete the form below and upload the required documents. You will then receive an e-mail with your host permit application number.

After receiving your host permit application number:

  • Go to an Accès Montréal office to have your identity verified. 
  • Bring photo ID and a printed copy of your most recent provincial Notice of Assessment. 
  • Pay the processing fee: $350 plus taxes.

If your application is accepted, you will receive the permit by e-mail within a few days. Print and display it so that it is visible from the street. You must renew the permit each year.

I complete the notice of compliance

Complete the form below and upload the required documents. You will then receive an e-mail with your host permit application number.

After receiving your host permit application number:

  • Go to an Accès Montréal office to have your identity verified. 
  • Bring photo ID and a printed copy of your most recent provincial Notice of Assessment. 
  • Pay the processing fee: $350 plus taxes.

If your application is accepted, you will receive an e-mail with the CITQ notice of compliance signed by the city.

  • Use the signed notice to submit your registration application to the Corporation de l’industrie touristique du Québec (CITQ). You will be required to provide documents and pay the applicable fee. 
  • Once you receive your CITQ number, please confirm receipt by replying to the e-mail you receive from the city.

You will receive the permit by e-mail within a few days. Print it out and display it so it’s visible from the street. You must renew it each year.

Apply for the permit

Online

The application period has ended. You will be able to apply for a permit again in early 2027.
