Short-term tourist accommodation
Do you want to rent your home to tourists on platforms like Airbnb? You must comply with municipal by-laws and the province’s Tourist Accommodation Act.
Rent your principal residence
Using your main residence for tourist rentals is prohibited in Lachine, Saint-Laurent and Saint-Léonard.
In the other boroughs, the short-term rental of part or all of a principal residence is subject to several rules and regulations.
The rental of a room in your principal residence is subject to the same rules as the complete rental of the principal residence.
Rent during the authorized rental period
In most boroughs, you can use your main residence for tourist rentals from June 10 to September 10 of each year. You must apply for a host permit and meet several criteria.
Outside of this period, it is prohibited to rent your principal residence for short periods.
Home exchanges
Home swapping through platforms like HomeExchange is allowed. No permit is required.
Operate a bed and breakfast
Operating a B and B is only allowed in certain boroughs. Regardless of the time of year, you must check with your borough to find out whether a certificate of occupancy is required.
Tourist rentals excluding principal residence
Do you want to rent a space to tourists that is not your principal residence? To offer rental periods of 31 days or less throughout the year, you must get a certificate of occupancy.
This type of rental is only available in certain areas of Montréal. Find out what the criteria are.
To rent a dwelling for more than 31 days, contact the Tribunal administratif du logement (TAL).
