To take part in the collection of organic materials or food waste, a mini-bin is essential.

Follow these tips to place it in a convenient, easy-to-reach location. It’ll make your life easier and help you develop the habit of always composting.

How to make your mini-bin part of your everyday life

Ideally, you should place your minibin in the kitchen or dining room, where you’re most likely to dispose of organic materials such as kitchen scraps, table scraps or moldy food left over from cleaning the fridge. For example, you can place your mini-bin:

  • Under the counter
  • Under the sink
  • Anywhere that people can see it

You can also use a small container in your freezer for temporary storage of odorous materials. Every few days, or when the mini-bin is full, simply transfer it to the brown bin and you’re done!

How to compost in the bathroom

Did you know that the bathroom is also a place where there’s a lot of compostable material? Hair, paper towels, tissues, fingernails, wooden toothpicks can all be sent to a composting site.

That’s why it’s also a good idea to place a second mini-bin in the bathroom:

  • Under the sink
  • Near the toilet
  • Near your wastebasket

You can also increase the number of mini-bins in other rooms of the house, if required.

How to get a mini-bin

A beige 7-litre minibin is issued the very first time a brown bin is distributed to an address. Thereafter, no new mini-bins will be provided for that address.

You can also use any other closed container, or repurpose containers you have on hand such as buckets, jars, etc. Last but not least, you can purchase a mini-bin at any good hardware store or your favorite shop.
