Declare a solid fuel-burning stove or fireplace
Does your home have a fireplace or a solid fuel-burning stove? Have you removed a non-compliant heating system? You must report it. Find out how.
On this page:
Requirements
Do you own a solid fuel-burning appliance (ex.a stove or fireplace designed to burn wood logs, ecological logs, coal or pellets)? You must declare it, whether or not it is recent.
If you replace or remove an appliance that has already been declared, you must submit a new declaration.
You must get a permit before installing, replacing or removing any type of fuel-burning heating appliance (wood, natural gas, ethanol, propane).
Deadline
The declaration must be submitted within 120 days (four months) of installing, replacing or removing the appliance, or within 120 days of purchasing the home if you are a new owner.
Declarer
The building owner is responsible for declaring the solid fuel-burning appliance. If you are a tenant and your dwelling includes a solid fuel-burning stove or fireplace, please check to make sure that the owner has submitted the declaration.
If you own several dwellings in which there are fireplaces or solid fuel-burning appliances, you must declare all of them. Please use one declaration per dwelling.
Certification
Your declaration form must indicate whether your appliance is certified. Your appliance’s certification must guarantee a maximum emission of 2.5 grams of particles per hour into the atmosphere.
Only two certifications are recognized by the city. Please check the appliance’s technical specifications or get the related information:
- on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Web site
- on the Web site listing all certified appliances compliant with Canadian standard CSA/B415.1-10.
