Call for projects 2026: indigenous events
Are you an Indigenous organization wishing to organize a public event to mark one or more days of commemoration and celebration in 2026? Ville de Montréal is offering financial assistance to help you carry out your project.
Overview
This new call for projects provides financial support to Montréal Indigenous organizations for the organization of free public events held in connection with the following days of commemoration and celebration:
- National Indigenous Peoples Day – June 21
- 325th anniversary of the Treaty of the Great Peace of Montréal – August 4, 2026
- National Day for Truth and Reconciliation – September 30
Objectives
- Support events that promote the undeniable contributions of Indigenous peoples to the development of the territory of the Island of Montréal
- Increase the visibility of Indigenous presence in Montréal
- Support Indigenous cultural development in an urban setting during commemoration and celebration events for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples
Eligibility Criteria
Eligible organizations must:
- Be recognized as an Indigenous organization or an organization working primarily with Indigenous people and/or in promoting Indigenous cultures according to the mission stated in the letters patent
- Be registered as non-profit organizations (NPOs) in the Québec Enterprise Register
- Produce their event within the territory of Ville de Montréal
Project eligibility:
- All activities must be offered free of charge to the general public
- Activities must take place in 2026 and must highlight one of the three targeted days of commemoration and celebration (see above)
- The minimum project duration is one day and may extend to a maximum of three days, consecutive or not
Nature of the Financial Assistance
The grant amount may not exceed $20,000 or 90% of the project’s total budget
The amounts awarded and the number of supported organizations will depend on the number of projects submitted, as well as their evaluation.
Eligible expenses include all costs related to the project:
- Production costs
- Communication and promotion costs
- Project administration costs (maximum 15% of the awarded grant)
Ineligible expenses:
- Operating expenses of organizations (rent, electricity, insurance, etc.)
- Capital projects, including leasehold improvements
- Projects already supported by the Service de la Culture
- Project cost overruns and amounts allocated to cover the organization’s deficit
An initial payment representing 90% of the approved grant will be awarded to recommended organizations. The balance will be paid upon submission of the final report.
Application Review
Applications will be assessed based on the following criteria:
- Relevance of activities in relation to the program’s general objectives
- A rich and diverse cultural program that encourages interaction between various audiences and the promoting organizations
- Positive social impacts on the recognition of Indigenous peoples in Montréal
- The project’s potential to bring together partners
- Programming that strengthens social equity
- Programming that offers free activities to the public
- The organization’s capacity to implement and deliver the project, based on past experience and internal structure
- Presentation of a detailed and viable financial structure aligned with eligible expenses
Submit an application
Deadline: April 24, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.
With the aim of highlighting traditional oral practices, organizations will be invited to present their project in person to the evaluation committee, rather than submitting a written proposal. Please note that the presentation of your project - both in person and in any supporting materials - may be conducted in either French or English, at your discretion. Please make sure to be available on Wednesday, May 6.
Here are the 3 steps to follow:
- Indicate your intention to submit a project by completing the intention form. Deadline: April 24, 2026.
- Submit the 2 following documents: a copy of the organization’s letters patent and the project’s budget (revenues and expenses). Information will be sent to those who have completed the intention form. Deadline: April 30, 2026.
- Present the project in person: Organizations will be invited to present their project in person during a meeting with the evaluation committee, scheduled for Wednesday, May 6, 2026. The time and location will be confirmed with the applicant organizations.
