What to do this winter: Outdoor activities in Montreal
Winter is fun in Montréal! From sledding and tobagganing to ice skating, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, check out these suggestions for enjoying winter in the city. Choose from a wealth of free activities in your neighbourhood, in the heart of urban nature or downtown.
Celebrating winter downtown
The Christmas market from November 21 to January 4 is an opportunity to discover local creations, tasty treats and original gift ideas.
Explore light shows and art installations
From November 27 to March 8, downtown becomes a theatre of light as soon as the sun goes down. Some 30 interactive and immersive luminous works brighten the Quartier des Spectacles as part of “Lumino,” Montréal’s annual winter event.
At the same time, illuminated pathways through downtown and Old Montréal offer a magical stroll through sparkling tunnels, suspended sculptures and artistic displays.
Enjoy the wonderful world of winter sports
Place Émilie-Gamelin has been transformed into a winter playground with its urban sliding slopes. Just a few steps away, you can skate to music at the Esplanade Tranquille rink, surrounded by the lights of downtown. On Parc Jean-Drapeau’s cross-country ski trails, you can reconnect with nature while admiring breathtaking views of snow-covered Montreal.
DJ dance parties
To close the year in style on New Year’s Eve, the Grand Minuit event (in French) at the Old Port on December 31 features an evening with free concerts, a festive atmosphere and an unforgettable fireworks display at midnight.
At Igloofest (January 16–February 8, 2026), you can dance in the snow, dressed in colorful, festive outfits, to the beats of the best international DJs.
