Get a dog walker license
Are you walking more than three dogs at the same time? You must get a dog walker license and renew it each year. Find out how to apply for a license or renewal.
Obligations
As a dog walker, you must:
- Have the dog walker license on you whenever you are out with dogs.
- Comply with the 8-dog maximum under the by-law.
- Do not bring more than 2 dogs to a dog park (read and follow all dog park rules).
- Make sure that each dog wears a city-issued tag and that the tag’s license is valid.
- Keep control of dogs at all times.
- Pick up all excrements.
- Keep dogs on a leash with a maximum length of 1.85 m.
- Use a harness or halter attached to the leash of all dogs weighing 20 kg or more.
- Use a basket muzzle, as needed.
Companies can apply for a dog walker license. In this case, each dog walker must carry a copy.
Your application may be refused if you have already been found guilty of an animal-related offence (animal welfare, off-leash, dog displaying aggressive behaviour) or if you have not complied with a euthanasia order, whether in Montréal or elsewhere.
Fee
A dog walker’s license (first application or renewal) costs $111.80.
Licenses are non-refundable, non-transferable and cannot be assigned to another person.
Required documents
You must include with your application 1 form of identification and 1 proof of address.
If you are submitting an application on behalf of a business, you must show one piece of identification, along with one proof of existence of the corporation and of the agent or proxy designation.
