Claims

Last updated January 13, 2025

It is possible to file a claim against the city for financial compensation in the event of property damage or bodily injury (injury, flood, car or damaged property, etc.) that occurred within city limits, even if you live someplace else.

Personal injury or property damage

Several situations can lead to a claim being filed against the city, such as:

  • Getting hurt when you fall on an icy sidewalk
  • Your basement is flooded as a result of a broken water main or a public sewer
  • Your car is damaged after hitting a pothole, during a tow or by a falling branch from a tree that belongs to the city
  • Your property is damaged as a result of city construction work

If it is material property, the value to establish compensation will be based on the property’s condition at the time of the damage.

Damage caused by contractors

The city regularly awards contracts to companies for street maintenance or snow removal operations. If your property is damaged when they clean streets or remove snow, your claim will be forwarded to them.
