Obligations and responsibilities of pet owners
In Montréal, pet owners must comply with certain regulations intended to help humans and their pets live better together.
Montréal’s by-law concerning domestic animals sets out a legal framework to ensure that pet guardians act responsibly, to promote good behaviour and control nuisances. It also aims to prevent aggressive behaviour from dogs.
As of March 3, 2020, the provincial regulation applies as well as the municipal by-law, particularly with respect to its stricter provisions concerning dogs.
Your obligations and responsibilities
- Possess a valid license for your dog or cat and renew it yearly.
- Ensure that your cat (except if he or she is microchipped) or dog wears a tag issued by the city at all times.
- Ensure that your cat or dog is spayed/neutered and microchipped.
- Keep your dog on a 1.85 m leash (maximum) when it is on public squares.
- Make sure your dog wears a harness or a halter if he or she weighs 20 kg or more.
- Never use a collar that could hurt your pet, such as a strangling collar, spike collar, electric collar or martingale collar.
- Never tie your pet to a tree or street furniture.
- Keep your dog under control at all times.
- Never let your pet drink from fountains in parks or public squares.
- Do not bring your dog to a playing field.
- Always pick up your pet’s droppings and put them in a trash can.
- Do not feed your pet outside, as you are likely to attract wild animals.
- Make sure your pet does not disturb others or pose a threat to public safety.
Outside your home, on private property, you must keep your dog attached with a leash or cord if he is not in a fenced yard where his presence is authorized.
Vaccinating your pet
It is important to have your pet vaccinated to protect both you and your pet. If you bring your dog to dog parks, we recommend that you have him or her vaccinated and treated against parasites.
