Licenses, spaying/neutering and microchipping: Cat owners must comply with Montréal by-laws. Find everything you need to know about pet licenses and cat-related by-laws.

Licenses are required

Do you live in Montréal and own a cat? You must get a license for your cat and renew it every year before it expires.

Spaying/neutering and microchipping

Cats six months and older must be spayed or neutered and microchipped.

You will receive a tag along with your license.

Number of pets allowed

You can have up to 8 pets, including:

  • A maximum of 3 dogs
  • A combined maximum of 4 cats and dogs

For example: 3 cats and 1 dog

Going to Montréal with your cat

You don’t need a license to bring your cat to Montréal, as long as you’re staying for less than a month and have a valid license from your town or city.

Stray cats

Has a colony of cats settled into your neighborhood? Join the Trap-Neuter-Release-Maintain program to spay or neuter street cats and improve their living conditions.

Lost or deceased cats

If you lose your cat, or if he or she dies, you have 15 days to cancel your license. Did you find a stray, injured or dead cat? Find out what to do.
