Cats
Licenses, spaying/neutering and microchipping: Montréal cat owners must comply with all by-laws in force. Find out what you need to know about pet licenses and rules for cats.
License and tag
Do you have one or more cats? You must have a license for each cat and renew it each year before the expiration date. Once your license has been issued, you will receive a tag for your pet.
You can have up to 8 pets at home, including a combined maximum of 4 cats and dogs (example: 3 cats and 1 dog).
Spaying/neutering and microchipping
You must have your cats spayed or neutered and microchipped if they are six months of age or older. A support program is available for low-income families.
Is there a stray cat colony in your neighborhood? Take part in a program to spay or neuter street cats.
Lost cats and shelters
Have you lost your pet? Someone may have found your cat and taken him or her to a shelter. We may contact you directly if your cat is microchipped or has a tag.
Do you need to give up your pet? Find out how to rehome your cat.
