Do you have a pet in Pierrefonds-Roxboro? Whether it’s small or large, furry or not, a good pet must meet certain criteria to ensure harmonious living with the neighborhood!

This page will guide you through the regulations and best practices to follow.

Responsibilities and obligations as a pet owner

En tant que propriétaire d’un animal, il est essentiel de connaître vos responsabilités pour garantir la sécurité et le bonheur de votre compagnon ainsi que le respect du voisinage.

Rules for Cats and Dogs

Licence and medals

In Montreal, it is mandatory to have a license for your dog or cat. The license comes with a tag that your pet must wear at all times.

You’re moving? Don’t forget to keep your file up to date!

The license and medal allow you to:

  • Ensure that all animals are registered and that their owners comply with municipal regulations
  • Determine the number of animals in the area and provide appropriate services based on that count
  • Report and locate lost animals more quickly

  • Get a dog license
  • Get a cat licence

The license must be renewed annually. This process is quick and easy (especially if you do it online), and it helps keep your pet’s information up to date.

Potentially dangerous dogs

If your dog has been classified as potentially dangerous, you must obtain a special permit to keep it. This permit requires additional steps, such as providing proof of spaying or neutering, microchipping, and rabies vaccination, as well as a certificate confirming no criminal record.

Spaying/neutering and microchipping

Spaying, neutering, and microchipping are required for all cats and dogs over 6 months of age.

Microchipping is a simple, quick, and permanent way to reunite with your pet if it gets lost (especially if it loses its ID tag during its escapade).

Get a hold… on a leash

Your dog must be kept on a leash in all public places.

  • Maximum leash length: 1.85 m
  • If the dog weighs 20 kg (45 lbs) or more, it must wear a harness or a halter attached to its leash

Picking up dog waste

And no, your dog’s little “gifts” aren’t fertilizer!

To keep our common areas clean, please pick up after your pets and dispose of their waste in the appropriate places (trash cans).

Did you forget to replace your empty roll of bags? Don’t hesitate to ask someone nearby for help. Trust us: it’s less embarrassing to ask for a small favor than to leave a mess behind.

Barking and noise

Letting your dog enjoy the outdoors also means paying attention to his happiness. If his barking is loud and constant, it can certainly disturb the neighbors.

Please be understanding and patient with our young pups who are still learning.
