Licenses, tags and leashes: Montréal dog owners must comply with all by-laws in force. Find out what you need to know about pet licenses and rules for dogs.

Dog owners

While you can have up to 8 pets, the limit is 3 dogs or a combination of 4 dogs and cats (for example, 2 dogs and 2 cats).

License and tag

You must get a license for each of your dogs and renew it each year before the expiration date. Once you have applied for a license, you will receive a tag for your pet. Your dog must wear a tag at all times, even if he or she is microchipped.

Spay/neuter and microchipping

Spaying/neutering and microchipping is mandatory for dogs over 6 months of age. Some exceptions apply.

Leashes and harnesses

In a public place, your dog must be kept on a leash with a maximum length of 1.85 m. If your dog weighs 20 kg or more, he or she must also wear a halter or harness attached to the leash. Learn more about your other obligations.

Dog parks

Dog parks are the only public places where you can let your dog run free. You can bring up to 2 dogs at a time. More than 65 dog parks are accessible throughout the city. There are free workshops to help you understand dog behaviour.

Potentially dangerous dogs

There are special restrictions on dogs that could pose a danger to someone’s health or safety. If your pet bites or exhibits aggressive behaviour, you should contact the city.

Dog walkers

Are you walking more than 3 dogs at a time? You must have a walker’s permit.
