In Montréal, you may need a permit to save a spot for a moving truck or van. Here’s what your borough requires.

You don’t need a permit if:

  • you use legal parking spaces that are free of charge, without preventing other motorists from parking. However, you can come to an agreement with your neighbours to leave the space accessible to a moving truck.
  • you don’t block the sidewalk or a bike path.
  • your street doesn’t have parking meters.

You’ll need a permit if:

  • your move will take place on a street with parking meters.
  • You do business with a moving company.
  • Your move takes place on a street with an obstructed bike path.

Temporary no-parking signs

Only official signs rented from a specialized company are allowed. You must take care of everything, including installation, yourself.

Streets with parking meters

  • Once you have been issued a permit, the borough will contact Agence de mobilité durable to cover the parking posts with a hood. 
  • You will receive two separate invoices, one for installation and one for lost parking revenue.

Streets with bike path

You are responsible for purchasing the temporary sign and installing it 12 to 14 hours before your occupancy. Please note that only official signs, rented from a specialized company, are authorized.

You’ll receive your permit within five business days.

Truck and moving equipment

You do not need a permit if:

  • you do not plan to occupy the public domain for more than one day.
  • you use legal parking spaces that are free of charge, without preventing other motorists from parking. However, you can come to an agreement with your neighbours to leave the space accessible to a moving truck.

A permit is required if:

  • the public property will be occupied for more than one day, in all cases.

Rates

The minimum charge is $60 (including taxes).

The cost of the permit depends on the area of public property occupied and the number of days.

Streets with parking meters

  • Once your permit has been issued, the borough will contact the Agence de mobilité durable to deactivate the pay stations (without hooding).
  • You will receive two separate invoices, one for installation and one for lost parking revenue.

You will receive your permit 24 hours before use of the space starts.

This permit is free of charge.

Procedure

  1. You submit a permit application online.
  2. Fees are automatically billed by our system.
  3. The fees are then cancelled when your permit is issued. You receive an e-mail notifying you that your application has been cancelled.
  4. You receive an e-mail with your permit attached. You receive, free of charge, a valid permit to temporarily occupy public property for purposes of parking a moving truck.

You will receive your permit by email. If you require “No parking” signs, please indicate this in your permit application. Please note that the borough does not supply the signs, you must obtain them from a private company.
