Store objects on private property

In most boroughs, it is prohibited to store certain objects along the façade of residential and commercial buildings. Examples of objects include camper-trailers, waste containers, and merchandise for sale. Learn about the conditions that apply in your area.

Recreational equipment, such as boats, canoes and camper-trailers, must be stored in the side yard or backyard of a home or business.

Waste containers, which are often used by restaurants or businesses, must be placed in the side yard or backyard as well. Containers for construction debris are temporarily permitted along a façade when a work permit has been issued.

  • Cords of fuelwood can be stored in the backyard or side yard of a building, less than 0.3 m from the property.
  • Cords must be stacked no higher than 1.5 m.
  • For fire safety reasons, the cord of wood must not block doors or windows.

Storing certains items is permitted along the façade of a building, under a stoop, a porch, a balcony or a veranda. The storage space must be:

  • Hidden by an opaque barrier or lattice, or a thick hedge.
  • Locked if it contains sharp equipment or materials, such as pruning shears, a lawnmower, boards with nails, etc.

The following materials are prohibited:

  • Flammable products
  • Food

Storage in side yards or backyards

  • A maximum of three cords of fuelwood, each measuring 1.5 m3, can be stored in the side yard of a building, at a minimum distance of 1.2 m from the front yard.
  • Cords must be stacked no higher than 1.2 m.
  • Each piece of wood must be no longer than 0.6 m.
  • The wood must be stacked without blocking doors and windows.
  • The wood must not be left in a loose pile on the property.

Recreational vehicles

A recreational vehicle or a pleasure boat can be stored for a maximum of eight months, if:

  • The vehicle or boat is no more than 7.2 metres in length.
  • The vehicle or boat is not inhabited.

Storing certain items and fuelwood in yards along the façade of a home is not recommended, but is tolerated.

Applicable conditions

  • In all cases, items must be placed in a way that doesn’t block doors, windows or building exits.
  • Cords of wood must be stored under the staircase leading to the ground-floor entrance.
  • Snowmobiles, trailers, camper-trailers and boats can be stored along the façade and in the side yard of a building between May 1 and October 15.

If objects are piled up in the backyard or the side yard of a building, the pile must be no higher than 2 m.

Storage in a side yard or a backyard

Storing fuelwood for residential use is permitted between September 15 and April 30, providing that the following conditions are met: 

  • Three cords of wood measuring a maximum total volume of 4 m3 are permitted and must be placed at least 0.60 m from the property limit.
  • The wood must be stacked no higher than 1.55 m.
  • The wood must be stacked in well ordered cords and hidden behind an opaque screen, preferably composed of plants.

  • Propane tanks weighing more than 9.1 kg
  • Trailers

Authorized:

  • Fuelwood for residential use
  • Swings
  • Basketball hoops (must not encroach on the road)

Fuelwood

Storing fuelwood in permitted in residential areas, but certain conditions apply:

  • Maximum volume of 1.6 m3 
  • Maximum height of 1.22 m 
  • Maximum length of 2.44 m
  • Maximum depth of 50 cm

The maximum amount permitted in a side yard or a backyard is 6 m3.
