Ville-Marie, uniquely ours. Impeccably so.
The borough works seven days a week to keep downtown clean and invites all community members and partners to join forces in creating a unique and enjoyable place to live, work, and relax. Let’s care for our neighbourhoods the way we care for our own homes!
Respecting collection schedules, placing materials in the right spot, bringing usable appliances and furniture to appropriate organizations, and taking the rest to the ecocentre — participating in community clean-up efforts: these are all meaningful actions that help keep our living environment clean.
Whether you’re an organization, a business, a company, a resident, a worker, or a student in Ville-Marie, we all have a role to play in keeping our surroundings clean.
Our teams on the ground
Every day, the borough’s teams travel through the streets, sidewalks, alleyways, and numerous parks across our vast territory to ensure cleanliness. Every effort is made to foster living environments that are pleasant and welcoming throughout the area.
- Starting in early spring, our 245 cleanliness employees begin cleaning streets, alleyways, sidewalks, and parks using specialized equipment.
In addition, 141 borough brigadiers — either employed directly by the borough or by organizations financially supported by the City and Ville-Marie — patrol the various neighbourhoods of Ville-Marie on foot, seven days a week, year-round, to clean sidewalks and other public spaces: the business district, Old Montreal, Chinatown, the Latin Quarter, Shaughnessy Village, Ontario Street, and the Village.
Sidewalks, tree pits, utility poles, fire hydrants, and alleyways — a dedicated team travels across the borough on electric cargo bikes, removing weeds and litter seven days a week!
- To ensure our streets stay clean, the borough has deployed 1800 waste and recycling containers in public spaces, following a thorough analysis. These bins are made from a blend of 100% recycled plastics and are carefully placed in high-traffic areas or near service zones.
- A team of about twenty inspectors patrols the borough year-round to identify infractions — such as improper placement or timing of waste, unattended bins, or poorly maintained areas adjacent to residences — and to remove graffiti. Our teams carry out over 17,000 interventions annually and clean nearly 40,000 m² of graffiti, including more than 150 high-up tags.
The borough continues its greening and demineralization efforts by removing sections of concrete and asphalt to make way for trees, shrubs, and flowers. Recently, about ten alleyways have been greened (french content).
Your contribution matters!
However, keeping our neighbourhoods clean is a collective effort. Many of you already show your commitment by carefully maintaining the areas around your homes.
Here are some tips and advice to help you navigate the process and contribute effectively.
Avoid illegal dumping!
- In Ville-Marie, collection days vary depending on the type of material: garbage, recycling, bulky items, and food waste. Visit info-collections website or call 311 to find the schedule for your area.
- Materials must be placed in the appropriate bin between 7 p.m. the night before and 7 a.m. on the day of collection. Please respect the collection schedule and sort your waste by category.
- We all occasionally miss a collection. If that happens, store your waste in a cool place in a sealed container until the following week. Do not dispose of it in public garbage bins.
Public waste bins are installed to help pedestrians and transit users dispose of small items — paper, packaging, coffee cups, etc. — and keep public spaces clean. These bins are not intended for household waste. In fact, placing household waste inside or next to public bins is prohibited and subject to fines.
Although our teams regularly empty these bins, remember that each collection has a cost — and ultimately, that cost comes out of everyone’s pocket.
- If you have appliances, furniture, or clothing in good condition, you can donate them to various organizations that give a second life to items you no longer need, or bring them to the reuse centres at the ecocentres. Visit Ça va où? for more information.
- If your furniture, appliances (except refrigerators — be sure to remove the doors to prevent children from getting trapped), or construction, renovation, and demolition waste are not reusable, they can be collected on your regular garbage collection day. Items must be smaller than one cubic metre each, with a total maximum of five cubic metres per collection. Place them at the curb, in the same location as your household waste, between 7 p.m. the night before and 7 a.m. on the day of collection. GoRecycle offers free doorstep pickup for refrigeration appliances — including refrigerators, freezers, and wine coolers — in Montréal and Laval.
- You can bring your computers, monitors, and mobile phones to major electronics retailers for recycling. Many also accept chargers, printers, tablets, pagers, and more. Visit Les Serpuariens.
- If your garage does not accept used tires, you must take them to an ecocenter. They are not collected during regular household waste pickup.
- Residues from commonly used products that are toxic to both humans and the environment—such as medications, batteries, car batteries, propane bottles, and paint—can be brought to one of the ecocenters. Garages, pharmacies, and hardware stores may accept certain household hazardous waste (HHW) for recovery. Visit Recyc-Québec, Call2recycle, Éco-peinture.
- Sometimes, you need to dispose of a large amount of waste quickly. Can’t wait for your next collection day, or is the volume too large? Visit an ecocenter to safely dispose of large quantities of waste.
- All ecocenters are accessible to Ville-Marie residents upon presentation of proof of residence and valid photo identification. The closest locations are:
Ecocenter La Petite-Patrie
1100, rue des Carrières
514 872-0384
Ecocenter Côte-des-Neiges
6925, ch. de la Côte-des-Neiges
514 872-0384
- Ville-Marie encourages the community to take ownership of and green their alleyways. Contact your local eco-quartier, which will support you in enhancing your living environment.
- Green waste collection takes place in the spring and fall. Green waste must be placed at the curb, at the same location as household garbage, between 7:00 p.m. the evening before and 7:00 a.m. on the day of collection. This fall, collections will take place in September, October, and November.
