If you wish to install a television antenna on your roof, balcony or outside wall, you must comply with certain standards in order to limit its visual impact on Montréal’s landscape. Here is how to do it.

Rules to follow
- Requirements and restrictions vary depending on the zone.
- Depending on the type of antenna, height limits may apply.
- Depending on the height of the antenna, it must be installed a certain distance from the building.
- In general, antennas cannot be installed on a front-facing facade.
- Antennas cannot be installed on the slope of a roof facing public property.

Legislation
You do not need a permit to install a satellite dish, amateur radio or receiving antenna.
However, the installation of any antenna must comply with the urban planning by-laws (in French).
Please contact the borough to make sure that your installation is compliant.
Standards to follow
Install a satellite dish:
- On a flat roof, at least 3 m from the front wall
- On a sloped roof, on the side not facing the street
- More than 6 m from the front wall on the roof of a single-family home, duplex or triplex. The whole antenna must then be located at least 1.5 m from the property line.
Install an amateur radio antenna or a receiving antenna:
- On a flat roof, at least 3 m from the front wall
- On a sloped roof, on the side not facing the street
- In a back yard, at least 6 m from a front wall in the case of a lot located on a street corner
- More than 2 m from the rear wall and at least 1.35 m from the property line.
- A receiving antenna may not be more than 3 m higher than the building roof.
- An amateur radio antenna may not be more than 6 m higher than the building roof.
Telecommunication antenna
To install a telecommunication antenna (radio broadcasting or radio communication), you need a permit and must comply with the Site Planning and Architectural Integration Program (PAIP).
