How to request or cancel a civic number (street address)

Would you like to obtain a new a civic number (a municipal street address number) or cancel an existing one – perhaps as a result of construction or renovation work? Here’s how you can do so.

Only the property owner, or his or her agent holding a power of attorney, may submit an application for a civic number.

Rules to follow

  • A civic number can be cancelled if you want to convert a duplex to a single-family dwelling.
  • In some residential areas, only one basement dwelling unit may be added.

Once a building number has been assigned to you, you can purchase a number plate. You can buy one at a store or build one yourself, provided that you don’t change the number. The number plate must have a minimum height of 7 cm. 

Place the number plate on the facade, beside the main entrance. The number plate should be visible from the street. If the back wall of the building faces an alleyway, place a number plate on the back wall as well.

It is prohibited to paint the address number directly on the wall, or hang it from the wall on a piece of cardboard or on any other material.
