Lachine-Est is a vast territory of 63.8 hectares to be developed. This cradle of Canadian industrialization is surrounded by the Lachine Canal to the south, 6e Avenue to the west, rue Victoria to the north and the Canadian Pacific Railway to the east.
The site of the former Jenkins factory welcomed its first residents at the end of 2018. Other real estate projects will welcome residents in this area in 2021. The complete redevelopment of Lachine-Est will take place over a period of approximately 20 years. In order to prepare for the transformation of the entire area, a specific urban planning program is being developed and will be adopted in 2022.
A shared vision for the future of Lachine-Est
Following the public consultation that was conducted by the Office de consultation publique de Montréal (OCPM) in 2019, a shared project office (the Bureau de projet partagé) was created in 2020, organizing and overseeing a series of themed workshops. This shared project office’s mandate is to define a shared vision that will lead to a proposal for a special planning program (called a PPU in French). Coordinated by the Table de développement social de Lachine, Concert’Action, Les Ateliers Lachine-Est includes specialists, elected officials, representatives of organizations and landowners, in addition to employees of Ville de Montréal and the borough of Lachine. An overall plan for the area was unveiled by the project office in February 2021. The preliminary version of the PPU will be adopted in September 2021 and will be the subject of a new consultation by the OCPM in the fall.
An eco-district in the making
The development of Lachine-Est is being carried out with the objective of creating an eco-district: a living environment well served by active and public transportation, integrating green infrastructures and a variety of activities and housing.
