Description
Quebec is undergoing a major transformation, and the statistics speak for themselves. Interracial couples—and their biracial children—are increasingly present, even in rural areas. These rapid socio-demographic changes have real impacts on our perceptions, behaviors—or lack of action—toward these new realities that are emerging at high speed. That’s why it’s socially relevant to ask ourselves collectively: how is racialization experienced outside Montreal? Hasn’t communication, with a touch of humor, always been the key to intercultural understanding?
Magalie Lefebvre Jean is a sociology professor at Cégep de Rivière-du-Loup, as well as an entrepreneur in soap-making and pottery. Her essay “Ni comme ma mère, ni comme mon père”—which explores identity construction among biracial (mixed-race) children in Quebec—recently won the Radio-Canada Caroline Dawson First Prize.
