Install a water meter in a non-residential building

Do you own an existing building, whether new or under construction, that is intended in whole or in part for non-residential use? Installing a water meter is mandatory. Find out how.

Existing buildings

Before installation, you must:

  • Have plumbing that complies with standards: This includes, but is not limited to, adding taps and installing a support to reinforce the plumbing, grounding to prevent electrocution, a connection for the meter, a bypass line and a backflow prevention device (BPD).
  • Install backflow prevention devices, also known as BPDs, on the same pipe segment as your meter and have them checked regularly, as required by the Régie du bâtiment du Québec.

Meter installation and precautions

During installation, there could be a temporary interruption of the drinking water supply to your building or a slight decrease in water pressure. It is your responsibility to implement measures to prevent damage to your property.

New buildings or buildings under construction

You must submit your meter installation application at least 60 days before installation begins.

The city provides the meter and the equipment. You are in charge of installation. You will receive installation instructions about 2 weeks after we receive your application. You will have 90 days to complete installation.
