The city has announced that the Pont Jacques-Bizard in L’Île-Bizard-Sainte-Geneviève will be renamed Pont Guy-Lafleur, in tribute to the hockey legend.

The name change pays tribute to Montreal Canadiens’ hockey great Guy Lafleur (1951–2022). Lafleur marked the history of his sport en route to winning five Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadiens. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, Lafleur was also a recipient of the Order of Canada and the Ordre national du Québec, and he was recognized as one of the 100 best players in NHL history.

In addition to his on-ice achievements, Guy Lafleur was an appreciated neighbour and an active member of the L’Île-Bizard community, where he lived from 1995 until his death in 2022. From now on, the Pont Guy-Lafleur will embody the memory of a great Montrealer while also charting a course for the future of this fast-changing area.

New bridge: An infrastructure that meets current and future needs

Construction work on the new bridge began in 2022 and will be completed in the days to come. This stage marks a major step forward for sustainable mobility and accessibility in the borough.

The structure is distinguished by its contemporary design, with infrastructures geared to all users. The new bridge will feature four vehicle traffic lanes (one more than the former Pont Jacques-Bizard) along with a two-way bike path and a wider sidewalk, which will offer pedestrians a safe and people-friendly space.

The new bridge will also include modern street furniture (lampposts, planters) and a lookout. Because more resistant materials were used, the infrastructure is expected to last 100 years, or 40 more than its predecessor.

Additional work in the area

Work aimed at improving the lighting will continue until the end of 2025, as will work undertaken by the Service de l’eau. Lastly, Bell and Hydro-Québec will transfer their cable networks beneath the new bridge in the coming months.
