New permanent dike in Roxboro sector protects neighbourhood from floods

Built under the bicycle path just off 5th Avenue North, this permanent dike protects this residential area from spring flooding.

A 13-metre reinforced concrete screen wall was built in the ditch at the limit of the right-of-way of the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) and Rapides-du-Cheval-Blanc park. The previous dike, made of concrete blocks, was temporarily installed in 2019.

The height of the wall will provide protection against the highest water levels measured to date in the area, i.e. those of the spring flood of 2017.

The budget approved by the municipal council for the construction of the dike amounts to $1,092,695.36, an expense that will be fully covered by Ville de Montréal.

This project comes as a result of the many formal requests we have made to Ville de Montréal as well as the Quebec government since 2017, when we asked for this type of infrastructure to be installed in our vulnerable flood zones. Until now, we have been left entirely on our own. Despite this, we have managed to protect our flood-prone areas through temporary measures. However, these measures required a great deal of human resources, as protective installations had to be rebuilt every spring. It was high time we had a permanent measure in this sector. We will continue to defend our community and hope that our voice will be heard in finding permanent solutions in other areas.
