Saint-Laurent invests in back-to-school safety
With the start of the school year, Saint-Laurent is increasing its efforts to make travel safer and more pleasant, particularly in areas frequented by students, parents and school staff.
Over $3 M has been invested this year in collaboration with Ville de Montréal to improve road safety. The work being carried out includes the following:
- Installation of 10 curb extensions (bulb-outs) to make crossings safer
- Raising of 6 pedestrian crossings and 5 intersections for better visibility
- Installation of 21 speed bumps to slow down traffic
- Work on 4.3 km of sidewalks to make it easier to get around on foot
In addition to its work on the ground, Saint-Laurent is continuing its efforts to raise awareness among motorists in residential streets around schools, where signs in the form of schoolchildren holding a placard that reads “Attention à nos enfants!” (“Watch out for our children!”) are once again visible. These signs, which have been used for three years, remind drivers to exercise extra caution in these areas.
Saint-Laurent is also collaborating with the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), the Centre de services scolaires Marguerite-Bourgeoys, the English Montreal School Board and the administration teams of the schools concerned to conduct a targeted awareness campaign. Police teams from the SPVM’s poste de quartier 7 are distributing educational materials in front of some 15 schools to promote safe behaviours among children, parents, cyclists and motorists. This initiative is complemented by the creation of a web page listing the behaviours to adopt and restrictions enforced around the schools concerned, as well as digital displays at various strategic locations throughout the borough.
These joint efforts aim to create a safer and more peaceful school environment for everyone.
Every new school year reminds us of the importance of protecting our children on their way to school. In Saint-Laurent, we are doing everything we can to ensure these journeys are safe and adapted to our urban reality. Thanks to the work of our teams and partners, we continue to improve infrastructure and raise awareness. Together, we are building a safer environment for our young people.
