Saint-Laurent Sealed its Time Capsule Heading Toward 2043!
On September 20, Saint-Laurent sealed a new time capsule during an official ceremony held at borough hall, marking a major step toward its 150th anniversary celebrations in 2043.
One after another, Alan DeSousa, Mayor of Saint-Laurent; Caroline Casabon, Executive Director of the Saint-Laurent Mont-Royal Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Kadiétou Savadogo, Executive Director of the Centre Bon Courage, and several residents as well as representatives from local schools and borough employees presented their selection of items, including clothing, photos and messages illustrating the current realities of life in Saint-Laurent.
Members representing various groups within Saint-Laurent’s community placed a variety of items in the 2025 time capsule to illustrate the realities of daily life, technological advances, environmental concerns, and cultural practices of our times.
- Several residents helped paint a vivid and authentic picture of the community in 2025 through their contributions. Some highlighted Saint-Laurent’s commitment as a Monarch-Friendly City since 2017 with milkweed seeds, while others shared personal items, including a medal won in a sports competition in recognition of a career that began in Saint-Laurent.
- The business community, represented by Mrs. Casabon, conveyed its wishes for 2043, which were gathered during the Mayor’s conference on September 16.
- Representing organizations, the Centre communautaire Bon courage, through Mrs. Savadogo, contributed a t-shirt worn by volunteers during the Festival Bon courage.
- The school community, represented by a teacher from École secondaire Saint-Laurent, contributed a t-shirt from the students’ uniform.
- Staff from the libraries contributed a bag featuring the logo of the upcoming 60th anniversary of the Bibliothèque du Vieux-Saint-Laurent. The bag contained, in particular, programs and a library card from Santa Claus.
- Borough council, through Mayor Alan DeSousa, contributed a series of photos illustrating sites in Saint-Laurent that are slated for development in the coming years.
Outstanding residents’ participation
The call for participation was officially launched when the year 2000 capsule was opened on August 10, giving residents the opportunity to rediscover objects and stories from the beginning of the new millennium, objects that carry memories and hope.
The first items had in fact been contributed by Rajko Dodic, a Lethbridge Councillor, highlighting nearly 60 years of being twinned with Saint-Laurent.
Spurred on by this great enthusiasm, residents and all other sectors of the community submitted their suggestions over the summer before the items chosen by a selection committee were delivered to borough hall. This process ensured that a wide range of ages, cultures, neighbourhoods and communities were represented.
Join us in 2043!
The time capsule will remain sealed until 2043, the year of Saint-Laurent’s 150th anniversary. It will then be opened so that future generations can discover the stories of this era and once again see how the community has changed over the years.
