Extreme heat - Montréal is taking action due to the extreme heat felt in the city

Montréal 18 juin 2024 — Due to the episode of extreme heat felt across the city, Montréal is rolling out its special response plan for extreme heat.  

Pools, wading pools and splash pads

In an effort to provide cooling stations for Montrealers, the city has opened all splash pads across its territory, with extended opening hours. Several swimming and wading pools are also open. For more information, citizens may refer to their borough.

Cooling islands

Various municipal establishments, such as cultural centres and recreation centres are air conditioned and can welcome citizens seeking a place to stay cool. Montrealers are encouraged to contact these facilities prior to their visit.

Safety tips in case of extreme heat

In accordance with public health recommendations, citizens should: 

-     Drink lots of water before they begin to feel thirsty 

-     Take a cool bath or shower, or use a wet cloth to cool down 

- Check in with loved ones 

-     Spend a few hours a day in an air-conditioned or cool location 

-     Wear light-colored and lightweight clothes 

-     Reduce their physical activity 

Special response plan (Plan particulier d’intervention)

Montréal rolls out its special response plan for extreme heat whenever the criteria set by the city’s public health authority are met. These include a weighted average of forecasted daytime temperatures equal to or exceeding 33 degrees Celcius over three days and of nightly temperatures equal to or exceeding 20 degrees Celcius over two consecutive nights. 

Montréal may also activate its special response plan for extreme heat in the presence of aggravating factors requiring mobilization.
