Register a vacant building
Do you own one or more vacant buildings in Montréal? Did you know that as of January 1, 2026, you must register them? Find out how.
Targeted buildings
All vacant commercial, industrial, institutional or residential buildings, whether primary (houses, apartment buildings, duplexes, etc.) or accessory (garages, sheds, hangars, etc.) are targeted.
The registration procedure does not apply to buildings that are:
- Partially vacant
- Occupied on an occasional or seasonal basis
- Under construction
Registration form
In person
- Bring the completed and signed form in paper format to the permit counter of the borough where the building to be registered is located. If you are unable to travel in person, sign the power of attorney section of the form to be represented.
Historic buildings
For a vacant historic building, you must complete the section concerning the condition of the building.
Your building is considered historic if it is:
- Cited or located in a heritage site, under Québec’s Cultural Heritage Act
- Listed in the inventory of historic buildings
- Mentioned in Appendix 3 of the 2050 Land Use and Mobility Plan or located in one of the historic areas, as identified on this interactive map
If in doubt, check with the permit counter in your borough.
Cancelling a registration
Has your vacant building become occupied? Does it need to be demolished? You must revoke your registration by completing the relevant section of the form and returning it to the permit counter. Revoking your registration is free of charge.
