Subsidy for buildings occupied by social economy businesses

Are you a social economy business established in the agglomeration of Montréal? This program offers up to $400,000 in subsidies to acquire a lot or a building or to complete a construction, renovation or expansion project on a building or premises.

Limited funds are available for 2022 and 2023. All submissions will be placed on a waiting list and we will contact applicants if funding becomes available.

With a budget of $10.8 million, this program is part of Montréal: Geared Up for Tomorrow, the city’s 2018-2022 Economic Development Strategy. Financing is aimed at supporting the growth of Montréal-based social economy businesses.

Eligibility criteria

This subsidy program is available to social economy businesses in the agglomeration of Montréal that meet the following conditions:

  • Must be a non-profit (NPO) or a co-op.
  • Must be a social economy business within the meaning of the 2013 Social Economy Act: “Democratically-run organizations that combine economic viability with social objectives, while responding to the needs of a community of members or users.”
  • Must be the owner, future owner or tenant in the building or premises mentioned in the application.

Component 1: Acquisition of a building or lot

Financial assistance can cover as much as 40 per cent of the acquisition cost, up to $400,000.

Businesses whose applications are accepted must acquire the building or lot by no later than October 31, 2024, or no more than six months after their eligibility for the program is confirmed.

An application can be submitted for both components of the program. If that is the case, the subsidy amount will be calculated for component 1, then for component 2, without exceeding a total of $400,000 for the same building.

Component 2: Renovation or construction of a building

Financial assistance can cover up to 40 per cent of eligible work, to which an amount equal to 50 per cent of professional fees (architecture, design, engineering, project management, urban planning, archeology or consulting) may be added, up to a maximum of $400,000.

Businesses whose applications are accepted must complete most of their work by no later than June 30, 2024. Work must be done by contractors holding an appropriate licence from the Régie du bâtiment du Québec.

An application can be submitted for both components of the program. If that is the case, the subsidy amount will be calculated for component 1, then for component 2, without exceeding a total of $400,000 for the same building.
