Need help with food security, transportation for an older person or emotional support? Looking for low-cost housing, legal aid or a place to volunteer? It’s easy – just dial 211.

This three-digit number puts you in touch with community programs and resources throughout the greater Montréal area. And it’s available in more than 200 languages!

The 211 site holds information about some 5,000 social and community organizations. It’s an online directory – and a way of reaching out to residents and newcomers who are looking for help.

The idea of  getting a 211 line in Montréal came from a citizens’ movement, Je Vois Mtl. They were inspired by similar initiatives in a number of North American cities, including Laval and Québec City.

The 211 line is an extension of the telephone and online services provided by the Information and Referral Centre of Greater Montréal. Operating 365 days a year from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., 211 makes it easier to reach more people.

While every call is confidential, callers’ sociodemographic data are recorded along with the nature of their requests. The centre collects this valuable information about community social issues so that elected representatives and decision-makers can use it.
