Adopting a green space allows you to express your creativity, make the neighbourhood more welcoming and protect biodiversity. Express your passion by adopting a green space!

For a second year, the borough is making small green spaces located on public land available. It’s an initiative to allow you to beautify your neighbourhood and create a space that reflects your taste and preferences.

What kind of green spaces?

Damage or theft

In case of damage or theft, contact the Éco-quartier in your area.

To ensure your safety and contribute to the protection of your green space, please respect the following rules and recommendations:

  • Leave a minimum width of 1.8 meters between the boundary of private land and your work.
  • Leave a free strip about 20 cm wide between your work and the street or the curb of the sidewalk
  • Any borders, fences or planters used must be no more than 30 cm in height and must be spaced 30 cm from the street or the curb.
  • Identify your space using the sign provided by the Éco-quartier.
  • Maintain and water your green space, making sure that your plants do not interfere with pedestrian traffic or visibility for drivers.

Is there a tree in your green space?

  • Keep the tree(s) in place.
  • Do not install any objects, lights or decorations in the tree.
  • Be careful of the roots of the tree when digging.
  • The size of the root ball of the plants to be planted must not exceed 13 cm.
  • Avoid adding soil around the trunk so as not to suffocate the tree and jeopardize its survival.

The green spaces mentioned are and remain the property of the Ville de Montréal. In the event of non-compliance with the rules, the borough reserves the right to take over the dedicated spaces.

  • Plants must not exceed a height of 75 cm.
  • Tree planting is prohibited.
  • No climbing, poisonous, invasive or harmful plants are allowed (buckthorn, knotweed, rose, dog-strangling vine, miscanthus, etc.).
  • Growing vegetables or other plants intended for consumption is not recommended, but is not prohibited. However, growing pumpkins, melon, corn or cucumbers is not allowed
  • You may add your own soil to your planting space. However, you must not add soil or mulch more than 10 cm thick
  • The use of pesticides is not allowed.

In the event of non-compliance with the rules, the borough reserves the right to take over the dedicated spaces.

Help us facilitate our snow removal operations and preserve your spaces.

  • Make sure you have cleaned up and closed down your space by November 1
  • Identify your green space well to prevent it from being damaged. We recommend that you identify it with stakes on all four corners.
  • Remove any rocks, bricks or other similar items to prevent accidents and mechanical breakage of snow removal equipment.
  • The borough does not offer any guarantee concerning the safeguarding of plants in your green space. Snow removal operations may be carried out on it, hence the importance of properly identifying your space.
