The Express Bike Network (EBN) extends onto Rue Saint-Antoine, between Rue Guy and Rue du Square-Victoria. A bidirectional bike path will connect the existing Viger/Saint-Antoine/Saint-Jacques EBN bike lanes in downtown and Le Sud-Ouest.

Everything you need to Know about the project

When?

  • Start of work: End of June 2024
  • End of work: Fall 2024

Where?

  • On Rue Saint-Antoine, between Rue Guy and Rue du Square-Victoria.
  • Within the Square-Victoria perimeter, between Avenue Viger and Rue Notre-Dame.

    What?

    • A bidirectional bike path on the south side of Rue Saint-Antoine
    • One-way north-bound and south-bound bike lanes on Rue du Square-Victoria and Rue McGill, between Avenue Viger and Rue Notre-Dame
    • A buffer zone between parking lanes and bike paths to prevent accidents caused by opening car doors
    • Bike lane and roadway markings
    • Areas for planting trees and plants
    • Concrete curbs at intersections to make travel safer
    • Traffic lights adjusted to cyclists’ crossing
    • Bus drop offs on Rue McGill
    • A northbound landing stage on Rue du Square-Victoria

Why?

  • Unite the existing bike network in downtown for long-distance cycling and the most direct possible access to major institutions such as the Bell Centre and Place Bonaventure
  • Provide a safe and efficient bike link

Traffic and car parking

After the work in 2024, several changes are in store:

  • Traffic lane removed on Rue Saint-Antoine, between Rue Guy and Rue du Square-Victoria as well as on Rue du Square-Victoria north and southbound
  • One-way eastbound lane on Rue Saint-Antoine, between Boulevard Robert-Bourassa and Rue du Square-Victoria
  • Some parking spaces removed at intersections to make travel safer
  • Parking lane removed on Rue Saint-Antoine, between Rue Jean-D’Estrées and Boulevard Robert-Bourassa
  • Parking lane removed on Rue McGill, between Rue Saint-Jacques and Rue Notre-Dame Ouest, to have protected bike lanes on both sides of the street

Future developments

The bidirectional path on Rue Saint-Antoine is a temporary measure that will allow cyclists to travel from west to east during the reconstruction work on Rue Saint-Jacques, between Rue Lucien-L’Allier and Boulevard Robert-Bourassa. This work will be carried out as part of the third phase of the Quartier des gares project (2025-2027). Afterwards, there are also plans to completely rebuild Rue Saint-Antoine, between Rue Guy and Boulevard Robert-Bourassa.

Eventually, the development of the EBN, between Rue Guy and Rue du Square-Victoria, will consist of a one-way bike path east on Rue Saint-Jacques and west on Rue Saint-Antoine. The option of keeping the bidirectional bike link between Rue Square-Victoria and Avenue Peel is under study.
